Louis Erard Marqueterie de Paille – Rye straw, real craft

Louis Erard turns rye straw into a dial that reads like quiet poetry in blue. The Marqueterie de Paille is limited to 25 pieces and measures 39mm. Price is CHF 4,500 excl. tax.

The dial is the point. Portuguese artist Bernardo d’Orey selects, opens and flattens each fibre by hand, then composes the surface so the colour, texture and sheen shift with the light. What seems abstract resolves into patient craft.

Each dial is built from 28 individually crafted sections, every piece defined by its own shape, size and fibre direction. Tolerances sit below 0.1 millimetre, so placement must be right the first time. Natural variations in the material ensure that no two dials are the same.

There is charm in the restraint. No fireworks, just material treated with respect and time. The watch invites you to slow down and watch the dial breathe as the light moves. A small reminder that luxury can be a matter of touch rather than noise.

At 39mm, the proportions promise daily wear without theatre. The edition is rare by nature and accessible by conviction, as the brand puts it. I would add only this: the value here is in the hours hidden in those fine blue straws, not in a spec sheet.
