URWERK’s UR-300 Time Quantum shifts the brand’s wandering-hour language into a sharper dialect. Two perpendicular hour modules form a T-frame, each end tipped with a tri-sided prism. As minutes sweep a 108° arc, the base prism carries the current hour. At 60, the whole architecture performs a quick-blink jump: the frame advances and rotates 72°, the crossbar becomes the stem, the former stem becomes the crossbar, all four prisms spin, and the next hour appears. Everything recalibrates in one controlled pulse. It is neat, a little theatrical, and satisfyingly precise.
The idea is familiar in spirit to longtime URWERK followers, yet the execution is new. Where earlier pieces leaned on retrograde drama, the UR-300 chooses a single instantaneous event. The aesthetic metaphor is quantum entanglement. The practical result is clarity: fewer moving displays at once, one decisive act per hour.
Energy management is the crux. Multiple high-inertia parts must jump without recoil, stress or wasted motion. URWERK balances this with an automatic calibre UR-30.01V regulated by Dual Flow turbines, driving a double barrel for a 44-hour reserve. The hour mechanism is a modular planetary complication, cam and rack controlled, spring charged, and indexed by a Maltese cross. It permits forward and backward setting while safeguarding the jump.
Materials are workmanlike and modern: dual hour modules in beryllium copper, brass and anodized aluminium; baseplate in ARCAP AP1D and titanium with LIGA-processed nickel. Finishing is restrained but correct for the idiom – circular and straight graining, sanding, côtes de Genève, chamfered and polished screw heads. The display supplements minutes with three hands showing 3 x 20 seconds across 120°, a small nod to the lab bench.
The case is titanium Grade 5, 45.2mm x 58.8mm x 18.25mm, with sapphire crystals and 3 ATM testing. Two editions exist: 25 pieces in bare titanium and 25 in titanium with DLC deposited by PE-CVD treatment, described as AlTiN. A NATO strap keeps the mood utilitarian. Price is CHF 168’000 before tax.
What matters is not the theme but the construction. The UR-300 privileges a singular, coherent act of time display over swirling choreography. It is less spectacle, more sentence – subject, verb, object – written cleanly at the top of each hour. Watch it long enough and you might smile at the timing. The jump waits, breathes, then speaks. Precision is often quiet.
