The M.A.D.3 brings Vincent Calabrese’s poetic wandering-hour concept into the M.A.D.Editions fold, not as a reissue but as a respectful re-interpretation. Born from Calabrese’s 1989 Baladin, the hour does not jump. It glides across the dial while the minutes turn as usual, a calm choreography that feels self-explanatory once seen.
Calabrese’s career has long favored independent thinking over convention. Co-founder of the AHCI and creator of the Golden Bridge architecture, he has pursued mechanisms that privilege clarity and intent. That spirit suits M.A.D.Editions, conceived as a meeting place for authors rather than a fixed house style.
Translating the Baladin’s essence into serial production proved demanding. The M.A.D.Editions team rebuilt the module entirely on a Swiss-made La Joux-Perret G111 base, refining energy flow and amplitude to secure a stable 55-hour power reserve. New components prioritize reliability and long-term stability while preserving the smooth, progressive hour display.
The 40 mm stainless-steel case wears M.A.D.Editions’ familiar architecture: floating lugs, domed sapphire crystals front and back, and a bombé sapphire minute ring. Super-LumiNova sits beneath transparent elements, and the display’s layered discs add visual depth without noise. On the reverse, a line from Calabrese appears as the rotor turns: “Il est assez aisé de plaire aux autres, bien plus ardu d’être fier de soi” — “It is fairly easy to please others, far more difficult to be proud of oneself”. A quiet credo, well earned.
Two colors are offered at CHF 2’900 + VAT. The pink version is reserved for MB&F Tribe members and Friends. The blue version is available via the M.A.D.Editions raffle, with registrations open September 1 to September 7. Winners gain the right to purchase.
What matters here is intention. The M.A.D.3 does not chase spectacle. It refines a thoughtful complication until it runs with unhurried grace, letting the mechanism explain itself. In a field crowded with noise, that restraint feels modern.
