Unique and quietly pivotal, LEDERER’s InVerto “Prototype 00” will appear as Lot N° 100 at the Phillips Geneva Watch Auction XXIII, Hotel Président Wilson, on 9-10 May 2026.
This steel prototype sits outside regular production yet at the origin of the CIC “InVerto” 39 architecture. It is not an earlier draft so much as the inflection point when Bernhard Lederer’s idea was tested on the wrist and found its proper voice.
The premise was simple and brave: invert the watch so the movement is the dial. When the CIC “InVerto” 44 mm debuted in 2023, the message was explicit – a caliber should speak. The prototype explores whether that speech remains legible when mechanics take center stage.
Inversion here is structural, not decorative. Once the movement becomes the display, proportion and hierarchy must be argued in metal, not on a sketch. “Prototype 00” recorded those arguments – how to balance technical expression with immediate reading of time, how to prevent detail from drowning clarity.
Most prototypes vanish after duty is done. This one lingered near its maker, worn and scrutinized, precisely because it preserved the last open chapter before resolution. With the later “InVerto” 39 Titanium, the case was refined and the concept settled. Production is fully allocated, waiting lists lengthen, and the idea stands confirmed.
Collectors often chase rarity. The wiser ones chase meaning. “Prototype 00” offers both – a singular steel watch and the documented moment when doubt yielded to decision. It is the hinge between possibility and form, the place where a movement stopped hiding and started speaking plainly.
