There is a very specific kind of light that shows up right before the sun disappears. Photographers call it the golden hour. Painters have been obsessing over it for centuries. And now Laurent Ferrier has decided to put it on a dial.
The new Classic Moon Dusk, part of the brand’s Série Atelier, is the second chapter in Laurent Ferrier‘s ongoing celestial story. The first Classic Moon models looked up at the night sky. This one looks at the moment just before it, when the sun’s last rays hit the horizon and everything turns taupe, brown and gold. It is a small watch trying to capture a very big feeling, and honestly, it mostly pulls it off.
Same shape, new mood
The case is pure Laurent Ferrier. That pebble-like silhouette, borrowed from 19th century pocket watches, is still here with its soft curves and signature ball-shaped crown. What is new is the material. For the first time, this case comes in yellow gold, and that choice is not just cosmetic. The warmth of the gold sets the tone for everything else on the watch, like a filter over the entire design.
The dial runs an opaline gradient, taupe in the center fading into a deep chocolate brown at the edges, basically a sunset frozen in enamel and lacquer. Roman numerals and baton indexes are transferred in white so they stay perfectly legible against all that warm shading, because Laurent Ferrier has a bit of an obsession with readability. The date numerals get a pale yellow treatment, with an ochre “31” that shows up only on months that actually have 31 days, a nice little detail for anyone paying attention.
The moon takes center stage
Here is the technical heart of the piece: this is Laurent Ferrier’s first moon phase complication, and they clearly wanted to make an entrance. The moon disc is carved from gold sheen obsidian, a black stone that hides flashes of green, brown and gold depending on how the light hits it. The moon and stars are engraved into it, hand painted, coated in Super-LumiNova and then fired at high heat to bring out texture and depth. It sounds like a lot of work for something the size of a fingernail, but that is the point of haute horlogerie.
Above the disc sits a moon bridge made using plique-à-jour enamel, a technique where the enamel forms its own delicate lattice with no metal backing underneath. Light passes straight through it, so the bridge appears to float above the moon disc rather than sit on top of it. It is a genuinely tricky thing to pull off, and it gives the whole small seconds counter an almost weightless look.
What is actually inside
Powering all this is the manual winding calibre LF126.02, which combines an annual calendar with the moon phase display. The annual calendar automatically knows the difference between 30 and 31 day months, so you only need to correct it once a year, on March 1st, for February’s shenanigans. Flip the watch over and the sapphire case back reveals a long-blade click inspired by antique pocket watches. It is hand finished and produces a satisfying little click when winding, the kind of detail that means nothing to daily function and everything to the people who care about this stuff.
The finishing checks every traditional box: Côtes de Genève on the bridges, circular graining on the main plate, hand bevelled edges and mirror polished screw heads. Some of these details are barely visible even with a loupe, but that has never stopped watchmakers from doing them anyway.
The numbers
Just 20 pieces of the Classic Moon Dusk will be made, priced at CHF 93,000 before tax, reference LCF039.J2.BW1. It comes on a mocha nubuck strap with Alcantara lining and an 18K yellow gold pin buckle, available exclusively through Laurent Ferrier starting September 2.
It is a watch about a fleeting moment, made in a way that is anything but fleeting. Somewhere, a sundial is feeling very inadequate right now.
