MB&F is not exactly known for restraint. This is a brand that builds watches shaped like spaceships and robots, so when it launched the SP One in 2025, a slim, quiet, almost elegant 38mm watch, plenty of people did a double take. Now, a year later, MB&F is back with a twist on that twist: the SP One Pavée, dressed head to toe in diamonds.
Let’s start with what makes the SP One special in the first place, because it is genuinely one of the more clever movements out there. Inside the case, three key parts of the watch, the barrel, the balance wheel and the dial, all appear to float in mid-air. They share the exact same diameter, which is a neat trick in itself, and the bridges holding everything together are hidden away so well that finding a screw on the front feels like a scavenger hunt. The dial is tilted too, thanks to some clever conical gearing, so the whole thing looks like it is hovering inside a tiny amphitheater on your wrist.
That amphitheater comparison is not just marketing talk either. The bevelled flange around the movement really does look like the curved seating of a Greco-Roman theater, with the mechanics performing center stage like actors in an arena. It is a fun way to make a mechanical movement feel like a show rather than just a ticking machine.
Now for the new part. The SP One Pavée keeps this exact architecture but wraps it in 18K white gold and 255 diamonds, totaling just over 1.6 carats. Diamonds cover the case, the bevelled flange, the crown and even the buckle, all following the curves of that pebble shaped case rather than fighting against them. The dial also swaps its black finish for a deep dark blue, which pairs nicely with all that sparkle without turning the watch into a disco ball. It is bling, sure, but bling with good manners.
What I find genuinely charming about this whole project is the story behind it. During the pandemic, when things looked grim, MB&F founder Maximilian Büsser dug through a box of old, half forgotten sketches instead of playing it safe. One of those sketches, three circles that looked like a smiley face, eventually became the SP One. Not exactly a five year strategic plan, but it worked out rather well.
Technically, the watch is a manual winder with 72 hours of power reserve, 189 components, 31 jewels, and a balance beating at a gentle 2.5Hz. It measures 38mm wide and only 12mm tall, which for MB&F is downright svelte. Water resistance sits at a modest 30 meters, so this is a watch for admiring your wrist, not for diving into anything deeper than a bathtub.
The SP One Pavée proves something interesting about MB&F. The brand built its name on wild, spaceship like Horological Machines, but here it shows it can do quiet luxury too, and still make it feel unmistakably its own. Adding diamonds to a watch is easy. Adding them without ruining the design is much harder, and that is exactly the trick MB&F pulls off here.
In short, less shouting, more sparkling, same MB&F spirit underneath.
