Kerbedanz shrinks its extrovert chronograph without dulling the spectacle. The new Maxspor GR8 41mm keeps the dial-side regulating organ, now refined in a tighter, more wearable case, and pairs it with a calmer guilloche dial that lets mechanics and craft share the stage rather than shout over each other.
The star turn is the inverted balance brought to the dial. A three-armed, star-shaped bridge spans the display, its anglage and sandblasted contrasts framing the constant oscillation. It is not openworking for its own sake. It is choreography, and the balance keeps time as well as tempo.
Inside ticks the automatic KRB14-2 caliber with 343 components and 33 jewels, running at 4 Hz with a 48-hour reserve. A screw-regulated balance improves fine adjustment. Functions are classical and clean: hours, minutes, running seconds, and a monopusher chronograph with a 30-minute counter. One pusher handles start, stop, and reset, preserving the case lines and the ritual.
The 41 mm case in Grade 5 titanium reads purposeful but light, with double-sided anti-reflective sapphire and 50 m water resistance. A double-gasket pusher lets the chronograph be actuated underwater within the stated rating. It is an unusual flourish that feels more engineering pride than marketing dare, and it suits the watch’s pragmatic streak.
The dial steps away from the earlier maximalist cut-outs to a richer guilloche surface, executed in-house and used as counterpoint to the kinetic heart on show. Light plays on pattern while the balance provides motion. Technique and intention, in dialogue.
Straps swap easily via a hand-polished titanium quick-change system and secure with a titanium deployant. Variants include polished titanium in Outre Mer Blue at CHF 36000 excluding taxes, black DLC titanium with a Jet Black dial at CHF 38000, and a two-tone 18K rose gold with DLC titanium at CHF 68000. Allocations are scarce: 28 pieces for each titanium version and 18 for the gold-titanium piece.
Two years after the 46 mm debut, this is the stronger idea. Reduced diameter, clearer purpose, better regulation, and finishing that earns a second look. The GR8 41 mm does not attempt to be everything. It simply shows you the heartbeat, then keeps it steady.
