De Bethune DB28xs Sea Tourbillon - deep blues, high speed, quiet intent

De Bethune’s DB28xs Sea Tourbillon brings the brand’s blue-tinged poetry into a 39 mm frame, pairing a high-frequency tourbillon with a dial of blued titanium worked in a random guilloché pattern. The surface shimmers like calm water disturbed by a breeze – aesthetic charm with mechanical purpose.

The mirror-polished titanium DB28 case remains a study in comfort. Floating lugs – patented in 2006 – let the watch settle naturally on the wrist, and the featherweight build makes it an easy daily companion. Polishing titanium to a flawless mirror is unforgiving work; here the edges stay crisp and the continuity of the shine is intact.

Legibility is treated with the same discipline. Whitened hour markers and polished titanium hands play against a blued microlight hours track, with circular satin-finished minutes and seconds tracks. The result is depth without clutter – a layered dial that reads at a glance.

Inside, the hand-wound calibre DB2009V7 shows De Bethune’s familiar language: microlight textures, blued titanium elements, and that random guilloché carried onto the bridge covers and central deltoid. A self-regulating twin barrel delivers an over five-day power reserve. A balance-spring with flat terminal curve and a silicon escape wheel serve precision, while the movement is designed to resist magnetic fields, shocks, and accelerations.

The tourbillon is the clear flex. Built as an all-titanium exoskeleton, the 63-component cage weighs just 0.18 g, runs at 36,000 vibrations per hour, and turns once every 30 seconds. The architecture is markedly lighter than a traditional three-pillar cage and, by De Bethune’s account, supple enough to aid shock absorption – performance wrapped in understatement.

What matters here is intention. A slender DB28 in polished titanium, a dial that suggests open water, and a tourbillon engineered for real-world wear rather than a vitrine. Quietly confident – and just playful enough to make you check the time more often than you need to.
