Alpina contributes a single, thoughtful note to the Watches for ELA charity auction: a unique Heritage Alpiner Carrée Automatic with a salmon dial, to be sold by Christie’s in Geneva on 9 November 2026. No fireworks, just a well-tempered square that remembers its ancestors and keeps good company.
The design leans into the brand’s interwar vocabulary. The fully polished steel case (32.5 x 39 mm) stacks soft tiers and gentle curves in the Art Deco manner, settling neatly on the wrist. An ostrich strap with tone-on-tone stitching was made specially for this piece – tactile, pragmatic, and a quiet foil to the dial’s warmth.
That dial does the heavy lifting. Salmon, yes, but restrained, with sandblasted and satin fields playing against a chemin de fer minute track. Generous Arabic numerals speak the period language without parody, and the historic “Alpina” signature at 12 reminds us the house has lived this style rather than borrowed it.
Inside beats Alpina’s automatic AL-530 at 28,800 vph with a 38-hour reserve. It is an honest engine for daily use, visible through a sapphire back that reveals sandblasted and satin-brushed surfaces and blued screws. Around the window, an engraving reads “Watches for ELA” – a small sentence that gives the watch its purpose.
Charity pieces can drift into costume. This one does not. The case dimensions are humane, the finishing coherent, the typography period-correct without fuss. It feels built to be worn, not only photographed, which suits the spirit of ELA’s effort: practical help, carefully applied.
For context, ELA International has funded 601 research programs to date, investing €51.9 million in the fight against leukodystrophies. With Zinédine Zidane’s long-standing patronage and Christie’s handling the gavel, Alpina’s solitary square will try to turn connoisseurship into something more lasting than a paddock bid. A good watch can keep time. If all goes well, this one might help buy some.
