Jaeger-LeCoultre revisits its most audacious wristworn chiming calibre with the Duometre Grande Complication A Grande Sonnerie, a new interpretation of Calibre 182 with 15 complications, refined acoustics and a calmer, more legible face. It is a pièce unique, which feels about right for a movement that counts its parts in the thousands and its patience in years.
Born in 2009, Calibre 182 fused Grande Sonnerie, Petite Sonnerie and minute repeater with a retrograde perpetual calendar, flying tourbillon and twin power reserves. The secret is Duometre architecture – two independent barrels and gear trains feeding one regulating organ – so chiming never robs timekeeping. Here, a third barrel handles the crown pusher that replaces a traditional repeater slide.
The strike is Westminster-style: four hammers on four gongs sounding E, C, D, G in distinct phrases. In Grande Sonnerie the watch plays the quarter melody first, then the hour – a deliberate choice – while the minute repeater keeps the classic hours, quarters, minutes order. In numbers, that is up to 616 notes in Grande Sonnerie or 992 in Petite Sonnerie on a full wind of the chiming train.
Acoustics advance through a titanium inner case and caseback bezel, newly shaped and lengthened gongs, and metallic glass gongs, all aimed at greater resonance and tonal purity. JLC also adds a security that prevents re-triggering the repeater before reset. Two tower mechanisms coordinate the strike: a compact strike sequence governor and a stacked snail assembly nicknamed “tour infernale” to manage the melody permutations.
Control is intuitive. A selector governs modes – G, P, S – plus M for setting. Pushers handle chiming mode and calendar correction, while a crown pusher actuates the repeater. Power is split: 48 hours for time and calendar, dedicated reserves for the sonnerie depending on mode.
The dial is more open-worked, revealing the choreography of racks and springs in warm pink gold tones against dark blue-grey lacquer. The hour-minute-calendar subdial grows by 30 percent for clarity. Retrograde date, day and month arc cleanly; leap year at 12 complements the chiming mode at 6. Turn it over for the flying tourbillon and a tour of finishing: hand bevels, perlage, snailing, sunray Côtes de Genève and more.
The 45 mm Grande Tradition case marries a titanium body with pink gold lugs, bezel and pushers – 60 components in all – paired with a black alligator strap and a folding buckle featuring a patented micro-adjustment. It is not subtle in footprint, but neither is a chamber orchestra.
