Jaeger-LeCoultre revisits its celestial grand complication with the Master Hybris Artistica Calibre 945, a five-piece edition in 18K white gold that marries a Northern Hemisphere sky chart, a minute repeater and the flying Cosmotourbillon that orbits the dial in one sidereal day. It is a poetic machine with clear intent – astronomy on the dial, acoustics in the case, restraint in the finishing.
The Métiers Rares™ atelier renders the night sky in grisaille enamel, a 16th-century technique the Maison adopted in 2022. Successive firings build a deep blue field before Blanc de Limoges paints the constellations, creating layered chiaroscuro and convincing depth. A multi-level architecture underlines the effect – a midnight-blue disc with months and tourbillon seconds beneath a domed gold dial bearing the enamelled sky, star chart and transferred constellation names.
The Cosmotourbillon elevates the tourbillon from regulator to celestial hand. Its carriage completes an anti-clockwise lap of the dial in one sidereal day – 23 hours, 56 minutes, 4 seconds – in step with the sky as seen from the Vallée de Joux. The flying construction is secured only from the movement side, the 73-component mechanism housed in a lightweight titanium carriage on ceramic ball bearings. A 10 millimetre monometallic balance beats at 4 Hz. A calendar mechanism drives the sky display for precise setting, while a sun-shaped pointer at the dial edge marks civil time with a 24-hour rotation.
The minute repeater carries the Manufacture’s patented acoustic arsenal – Cathedral crystal gongs that wrap 1.5 times around the calibre and are fixed to the rear sapphire for resonance, Trébuchet hammers for stronger, faster strikes, and a silent governor that removes mechanical hiss. The result aims for purity and power rather than theatrics – the heavens, heard.
The white gold case measures 45 mm x 16.05 mm and comprises more than 80 parts. Broadly bevelled lugs, a convex bezel and a mix of micro-blasted, polished and satin-brushed surfaces play with light. All functions set via the crown; the repeater is activated by a left-side slide. No recessed correctors clutter the lines. A blue alligator strap and a white gold folding clasp with a patented double-wheel system allow 0.5 mm micro-adjustments.
This is Jaeger-LeCoultre at its most focused: craft in service of celestial time, sound shaped by structure, and a clear limit – five pieces – to keep the stars rare.
