Alpina brings its Solarmetre light-powered movement from the Alpiner line to the cockpit, folding it into the Startimer Pilot with a new 38 mm case. The idea is simple and sound: feed the watch with light – natural or artificial – and it runs for up to 10 months on a full charge. A brief return to light wakes it within seconds. No drama, just wattage.
The Solarmetre architecture comes from La Joux-Perret, a Swiss movement specialist within the Citizen Group alongside Alpina. Think of it as a three-layer build. The top is the dial, subtly translucent to admit light without breaking the classic pilot look. Beneath sit the solar cells, then the movement that stores and spends the energy with quiet thrift.
The shift to 38 mm is the more meaningful design note. It gives the Startimer truer field-watch proportions and broader wearability, without losing legibility. The silhouette is pared back, the stance measured – less parade ground, more flight log.
Alpina offers three executions. Two in steel: a black grained dial on black leather, and a blue grained dial on a blue textile strap. A third arrives in sand-coloured PVD-treated steel, with a brown grained dial and a matching NATO-style strap. Because the dial need not be transparent, texture and tone carry the aesthetic, not the tech.
There is historical symmetry here. Since 1883, Alpina has nudged pilot watchmaking along – from converted pocket watches in the 1920s to early automatics, chronographs, telemeters and GMTs tracking the first cross-timezone flights. The Solarmetre is a different kind of progression, less about complication and more about independence from the socket.
What matters is intent. A pilot watch should be legible, robust and ready. Light-powered autonomy suits that brief, and the smaller case suggests Alpina has been listening to wrists rather than boardrooms. If you must chase sun, do it with a coffee, not a charger.
