De Bethune DB28xs Dark Sand – Light, absorbed in zirconium

De Bethune recasts the compact DB28xs in a new key with the DB28xs Dark Sand, exchanging shine for shadow. The 39 mm case in matt anthracite zirconium is quiet, dense, and resolutely contemporary, turning light into something sculpted rather than celebrated. Crown at 12, open architecture intact, temperament altered.

Material tells the story here. Zirconium has been part of the manufacture vocabulary since 2012 for its hardness and stable oxidation, a practical path to longevity. Satin brushing across the anthracite case produces a fully matt surface that seems to catch darkness as much as light, a restrained finish that reads tool like but remains refined.

The dial preserves the Steel Wheels spirit with layers and voids. A black sandblasted titanium base sets a mineral stage, its texture recalling volcanic grit. A circular satin minutes and hours track in black titanium holds polished mauve titanium markers that echo the hands, lending a subtle purplish note and clear legibility. At center, the raised deltoid bridge in anthracite bears barleycorn guilloche, its bevels and sandblasted planes shifting from grey to deep black as angles change.

Technical substance is visible front and back. The hand wound calibre DB2115V13 runs at 28,800 vibrations per hour and draws on several De Bethune innovations. A titanium balance with white gold weights manages inertia and aerodynamics, the proprietary balance spring with flat terminal curve aims at stable isochronism, and a silicon escape wheel improves efficiency. Shock resistance is handled by the triple pare chute system.

Turn it over and the screw down back shows an anthracite microlight finish and a linear six day power reserve display in mauve and golden tones. Energy comes from a self regulating twin barrel, a long running De Bethune solution.

On the wrist, the numbers stay modest and humane. Case thickness is 8 mm, and the patented floating lugs in zirconium adapt to movement with unforced comfort. A leather lined fabric strap with matching zirconium pin buckle completes the package.

The Dark Sand reads as a nocturnal sibling to the DB28xs Steel Wheels. Same openness, different temperament. Matte zirconium, mineral textures, and high level mechanics placed in calm conversation. No fireworks, only control.
