The Freak turned watchmaking inside out in 2001. A quarter century on, Ulysse Nardin marks the milestone with the Freak [One Blue Enamel], a 99-piece ode to motion and métier. It keeps the radical brief intact – no dial, no hands, no crown – yet quietly adds a classical flourish: a guilloché-flinqué hour disc in vivid blue enamel, made by Donzé Cadrans.
The architecture remains pure Freak. The UN-240 calibre is the display itself. The orbital flying carousel performs a one-hour rotation to read the minutes, while the hour disc below turns once every 12 hours. Roughly 95 percent of components are designed for motion, which is why the watch feels alive on the wrist rather than merely present.
Setting respects tradition of the unconventional. Unlock the safety at 6 o’clock, rotate the bezel, and the time follows. Winding is by caseback, transmitting energy through the patented Grinder system. Think of a rotor on a four-pedal bicycle: a frame with four ultra-thin levers captures even small wrist movements, feeding a 90-hour reserve with notable efficiency.
Silicon is not a chapter here, it is the book. Ulysse Nardin introduced it with the first Freak; this edition continues with a silicon balance and hairspring, plus a DIAMonSIL escapement – diamond-coated silicon for low friction and high durability. It is material science in service of chronometry rather than spectacle, which is where it belongs.
The new enamelled hour disc is the poetic counterpoint. Cut in white gold for thermal stability, engine-turned with a sunray that catches light beneath translucent layers, then kiln-fired around 800°C until the blue reaches depth and calm. On a conventional dial this would be demanding. On a rotating, functional component with screw points, it borders on audacious – and it works.
The 44 mm case debuts in full titanium, satin and sandblasted, with 30 m water resistance and a sapphire back that reveals the kinetic sculpture. Perceived height is a manageable 12.00 mm, overall 13.30 mm. The integrated ballistic-textured rubber strap and titanium deployant keep the watch suitably purposeful. Limited to 99 pieces. Two final notes for the record. First, the Freak [One] earned the Iconic Watch prize at the GPHG 2023 – deserved, given its influence. Second, this Blue Enamel edition shows how the Freak can age with grace: innovation tempered by craft, speed moderated by touch. A laboratory that learned to paint.
