Ressence‘s latest art watch pairs Belgian artist Jules Wittock with the compact TYPE 9, turning time into a quiet riddle. Two editions – T9 JWE in Emerald Green and T9 JWB in black – each limited to 30 pieces, carry Wittock’s hand-drawn maze, miniaturised, engraved, and hand-filled so the line sits in depth rather than on top. At midnight and midday the rotating dials align and a hidden word reveals itself, then drifts away again. A private smile for those who wait.
Wittock’s labyrinths are traced freehand with a single entrance, a single exit, and a path between that spells a word. Here the logic meets mechanics. Ressence’s patented ROCS 9 turns the hours and minutes into orbital discs, so the artwork is not a backdrop but a moving part of the watch. Time becomes the fourth dimension of the drawing.
The T9 JWE uses an ALD-coated Grade 5 titanium dial in Emerald Green that flashes purple depending on the angle. The T9 JWB opts for black on black restraint. In both, the maze is milled directly into the titanium at 0.2 mm and filled with white lacquer and Grade A Super-LumiNova, the paint catching the metal and making the path legible without shouting.
The case is polished Grade 5 titanium at 39 mm by 11 mm, with a domed sapphire and the familiar caseback interface for winding and setting. Splash-resistance is a modest 1 ATM – this is a drawing for the wrist, not a diver. On leather with a titanium ardillon buckle, the whole watch comes in at 42 grams. Lightness suits the idea.
Inside, the customised automatic base drives the ROCS 9 module via the minute axle. It beats at 28,800 vph with 36 hours of power reserve, 31 jewels, 20 gears, and 4 ball bearings. The dial itself runs on a jewel ball bearing with eccentric satellites inclined at 9.75 degrees for the hours. Technical, yes, but all in service of clarity.
What I like is the shared discipline. Wittock removes decoration until only logic remains. Ressence does the same in watchmaking. The result is not a graphic slapped on a dial but an idea made kinetic. Wait for noon or midnight, trace the word, and carry on. A small ritual is worth more than a big complication.
