Oris continues its playful pas de deux with Disney’s The Muppets, this time handing the ProPilot X to The Great Gonzo. The result is a watch that smiles back at you when fully wound, yet still rests on serious mechanical footing.
Based on the skeletonised, 10-day ProPilot X Calibre 115, the Gonzo Edition keeps the movement front and center. The long mainspring becomes a stage prop of sorts, revealing Gonzo’s face when tension peaks. It is a neat reminder that a power reserve is not just a number but a living coil.
The dial leans into character without losing the plot. A blue-red-yellow gradient nods to Gonzo’s favorite colors, while the 10-day power reserve hand is a small red chilli, borrowed from one of his shirts. The dial ring shifts hue in changing light, a soft magic trick rather than a blare of confetti.
This is the third act in Oris’s Muppets collaboration after Kermit and Miss Piggy. Among the trio, Gonzo feels the most integrated, because the whimsy inhabits the mechanics. The animation of the mainspring and the practical power reserve readout make the joke part of the watch’s daily conversation.
Purists may grumble at the theatrics. Fair. But the canvas remains the Calibre 115 with its open architecture and marathon autonomy. Here the color and character serve as accents, not disguises. If a watch should reveal the mind of its maker, this one suggests a bench where engineering shares a stool with delight.
