“Orbit Midnight Purple” - Armin Strom’s date-on-demand glows darker

Armin Strom extends its chromatic experiment with the Orbit Midnight Purple, taking the familiar fumé dial and letting the color slip beneath the surface. The twist is not louder color but deeper intent – a frosted midnight purple mainplate that ties display and mechanics into one composed thought.

The dial graduates from vivid core to shadowed edge, ringed by a black ceramic bezel and anchored in a stainless steel case with a fully integrated steel bracelet. Hand-polished steel hands, filled with Super-LumiNova, keep night-time propriety; applied markers glow as well, while the 12 and 6 numerals – solid Super-LumiNova blocks – make darkness an ally rather than an obstacle.

Inside, the manufacture Calibre ASS20 keeps Armin Strom’s most original idea in play: an on-demand date that lives on the ceramic bezel, not the dial. Press the pusher at 10 o’clock and the date hand leaves its neutral post to point to the correct numeral, advancing at midnight as any well-schooled calendar should. Press again and it slips back to 12, clearing the view. A column-wheel governs the choreography, while the brand’s patented Equal Force Barrel supplies consistent torque and a calm 72-hour reserve.

Seen through sapphire front and back, the watch shows its workings without stage fright. The purple mainplate sets a deliberate backdrop for rhodium-coated components and hand-finished finger bridges. Bevels are polished by hand; perlage and circular graining enliven the rest. It is openworked enough to invite a look, restrained enough to reward a second glance. As is Armin Strom custom, assembly happens twice – belt, braces, and good manners.

Limitation to 20 pieces keeps the chorus small, which suits the Orbit’s voice. The System 78 line has always favored mechanical clarity over noise; here, the color serves the construction, not the other way around. The date appears only when asked, a polite complication for those who prefer a clean dial and a watch that listens before it speaks.
