Petite in diameter, large in intent. To mark 70 years of the Ladybird, Blancpain unveils the Lady B – a spherical 19 mm wrist-jewel that keeps the faith with mechanics only, echoing the 1956 Ladybird Bullet that housed the world’s smallest round movement.
Three threads meet here – Betty Fiechter‘s stewardship, 1950s biomorphic design, and a long habit of miniaturization. True to the brand’s stance of never producing quartz, the Lady B is powered by the Manufacture caliber 615, one of the smallest contemporary round automatic movements at 15.70 mm by 3.90 mm.
The case is conceived in volume rather than drawn in plan – 2.9 cm^3 of polished steel or 18K red gold, 19.00 mm wide and 13.20 mm thick, with 30 m water resistance. There are no lugs. A machined opening lets the double-tour calf strap pass through the case, a neat piece of packaging that wears like a jewel and swaps easily via a slot on the back.
Inside, the caliber 615 beats at 3 Hz with 38 hours of power reserve, using 180 components and 29 rubies, dressed with Côtes de Genève and a silicon balance spring. Introduced in 1995 and refined since, it is a proven micro-automatic. Even the caseback geometry was drawn around the rotor’s path.
The dial takes the quiet road – warm beige opaline, no gem-setting, applied gold stick indices just 1.82 by 0.39 mm, and two simple hands. A polished rehaut mirrors the case curvature. The crown bears JB, a nod to the house’s history. Nothing shouts. It simply tells the time, which is rather the point.
Colors for the double-tour strap include white, beige, mocha, burgundy, blue, coral, or purple, closed by a pin buckle. The Lady B is not a limited edition and opens a new chapter for the collection.
Context matters. In 1956, Blancpain’s Ladybird Bullet and its R52/R55 movement set records in round miniaturization. Today’s Lady B does not reissue that watch – it revives the idea and the attitude. A small sphere that beats is more than design whimsy. It is mechanical honesty in miniature, and yes, it sits in the palm like a polished pebble that ticks.
