Blancpain brings back the vintage spirit of the Bathyscaphe with a limited edition that looks squarely to 1968. It is a quiet salute to the golden age of recreational diving, and to the civilian side of the Fifty Fathoms story.
The name Bathyscaphe was secured on 5 September 1953 by Jean-Jacques Fiechter, then CEO of Blancpain and a passionate diver. Ten days earlier, Auguste Piccard’s bathyscaphe Trieste had reached roughly 1,080 metres south of Capri. The moment signaled a broader cultural turn toward the sea, and Fiechter gave that current a name.
In 1956 the Bathyscaphe arrived as the civilian counterpart to the Fifty Fathoms. The idea was simple and sound: a watch robust and capable underwater, yet easy to live with on land. No heroics, just good judgment.
Seventy years on, Blancpain revives a landmark 1968 Bathyscaphe in a series of 300 pieces. The design mirrors the original character and the essential skindiver codes noted in the release – purposeful proportions, underwater capability, and everyday elegance.
There are no technical fireworks announced here, and that restraint suits the brief. A skindiver should be clear in intent and honest in construction. If the new Bathyscaphe wears like the idea it celebrates, it will feel as natural with a sweater as with a wetsuit.
A name born in the age of underwater exploration. A spirit that still chooses function first, then lets the lines do the talking.
