Jaeger-LeCoultre unveils the Atmos Designer Calibre 568 by Marc Newson for 2026, a measured evolution of the designer’s 2016 piece, now with sunrise and sunset indications, Equation of Time, and an ultra-long-interval moon phase that errs by one day in 4,087 years. It debuts during Milan Design Week, 21-26 April 2026.
The Atmos remains a mechanical curiosity that rewards patience. Its sealed gas capsule expands and contracts with tiny temperature shifts, gently winding the spring. A one degree Celsius change sustains roughly two days of operation. The balance makes its slow, once-per-minute oscillation, and the whole mechanism settles into the kind of calm that wristwatches rarely allow.
Newson’s 2026 interpretation keeps the design spare and legible. The movement hangs inside a hand-crafted Baccarat crystal case – a single, mouth-blown block with rounded square geometry and deceptive lightness. Thickness drops to about 13 mm in places, yet rigidity is sufficient to support the movement on four rear attachment points that bring symmetry and a cleaner view from the front.
The dial layers information without noise. White Arabic numerals sit on a black-tinted sapphire disc with a minute track; months appear on an inner ring. Sunrise and sunset read off a concentric sapphire ring via small arrows, while the Equation of Time is shown as an ellipse around the hand arbour, indicating the daily difference in minutes between mean and solar time. The collection is calibrated for three latitudes – 30°, 40°, and 50° – so the solar data matches its chosen geography.
The moon phase sits at six o’clock on a smooth disc, sharing the Atmos’s long-game temperament. Left to run, the indications remain correct for millennia, aside from the familiar bi-annual nudge for Daylight Saving where applicable. Precision here is quiet rather than loud, and better for it.
A monochromatic palette focuses attention on mechanics rather than flourish. It suits the Atmos, whose architecture has always dictated its aesthetics. When the structure is honest, ornament can step aside.
Production is limited to 50 pieces per year worldwide. Pricing is given at 44,100 EUR in Germany and 44,400 EUR in Austria. Three references are offered – Q516511J, Q516512J, and Q516513J – aligned to their respective latitudes. Choose your sky, then let the room’s temperature do the winding.
